i was planning on a six inch compartment on either side of an 8 inch return..so six inches for the skimmer. does that make sense..

6"x6" is a pretty small foot print, I can't think of anything. The closest I can think of is the Bubble Magus NAC curve 3.5 cone skimmer at 6.5"x4.5".

Or you might be able to find an HOB skimmer for your sump.

I could make the skimmer section a little larger, it's just that I can only fit a 20g underneath so I dot have much space. Would 8 inches be good or

check out the SWC skimmer reviews on here, I did and ended up buying one and I could not be happier. A very good skimmer at a very good price.

I use an Eshopps PSK-75H for my 46BF, but the PSK-75 would work in the sump if you could get it to fit. I think it is 9"x4".

I use an Eshopps RS-75 - not sure if its the same thing - but it fits in just about any stand. I had a similar budget target and went with an Avast CS1 'DIY kit'. It was a BLAST to build, i learned a lot in the process, and it is a beast of a skimmer for the money. It pulls 1100 lph of air and fits a 9x9 footprint. It will handle a heavily stocked tank up to 150 gallons, so it will certainly handle anything you can throw at it in your 46g. And remember, no such thing as overskimming.
