    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for a DIY silent internal overflow?

For background information, I currently am running a canister filter on my 29 gallon marine FOWLR aquarium. I spend an ton of time doing weekly cleanings. I actually have a sump that is not currently in use and I would like to make use of it now to easily add a top off system (as I am getting sick of having to add RO/DI water by hand) and to relocate all of the equipment (heater, protein skimmer) to the sump. The tank itself has been running a total of 4 months without any loss (2 clownfish and a PJ cardinal).

I was considering a HOB overflow from lifereef, I know that they have a great track record in terms of not losing siphon, however, I am on the 4th floor of an apartment building and want to eliminate any risk of flooding.

Having said all of that, I would like to have a herbie type of overflow system as I have heard many have had good luck with those and that they tend to run silent. I have also purchased an eheim universal pump that is rated at 320GPH as I have heard those tend to be quiet as well. My two questions are:

    1) Does anyone know if the 29 gallon aqueon tank has tempered glass on the bottom? I would like to drill through the bottom, but if not I will have to drill through the back.

    2) What is some cheap material I can get to make a custom overflow box after my drilling and bulkhead install is complete?

I bought a 3/4" bulkhead for the main drain, and a 1" bulkhead for the emergency drain. I've heard of people using 8" or 10" PVC pipe and cutting it in half and then dremeling teeth. Was wondering if anyone had any luck doing this or if there were better recommendations? On a previous setup I used a glass-holes setup, which was fine but I don't want to go that route this time.

Anyways, thanks for any ideas or recommendations!

OK, so for the sake of sharing, I called Aqueon and they informed me that all of their 29 gallon tanks, with the exception of some sold in their kits, have no tempered glass in them. They recommended I do a few tests based on a youtube video to ensure that there was no tempered glass, however.

I decided to create my internal overflow out of AZEK. Just wondering if anyone has done this before?
