Hey guys i know a couple of you all have some nice cameras. My family is looking to get a D SLR. We have been looking at nikon and sony... but not too impressed with canon.

Since its our first dslr we kinda want to keep it under about 600ish dollars. Do any experienced camera owners/users have any recomendations

never been a fan of Sony...they're too proprietary from me (ie memory stick duos etc)

I have a Nikon D300 and love it. For you price range I would say check craigslist for D40x or D60 with low shutter accuations. You may even get a good deal on a D90. They're a lot of people upgrading camera bodies all the time...

i personally trust nikon for cameras and optics in lens. i am an optician so lens quality is my forte. although sony does use a carl zeiss lens on there cameras also. not to mention carl zeiss also made a lens for the hubble space telescope. IMO you cant go wrong on either.

i have a friend thats a photographer for a living and he swears by nikon. between his support/maintenance on cameras from people breaking them at photoshoots alone he swears by them.

crazy expensive though imo. ive used nikons, canons, and sony's. i didnt like the interface or feel of the sony, the canon and the nikon produced better 'auto-mode' shots than the sony.

anyways if you want the site to review cameras check out dpreview.com

when its time to get one ill be getting a canon only because of the fact id be able to use other lenses with it and whereas nikon kind of locks you in.

thanks for all the input guys! K+ to you all...
Nikon has a new D3000 which I am thinking about because it is in my price range and seems (to me) to be a really good camera
