I have some more questions:

1. Is it possible to start fish less only and convert to a coral reef setup later on? Saving on the expense of high effeiceny lights?

2. People and documentation are mentioning water changes around 5%, as a rough guide, which is far lower than my fresh water tanks - is this due to the smaller amount of evaporation and lack of nitrates?

3. When adding a sump - you are adding a single point of failure, which could result in heavy water damage. How do people address these concerns?

4. RO systems - are people purchasing these items from local fish stores or externally at a large do it yourself stores.

5. Mixing and adjusting water - are people buying storage containers that can hold adaquet amounts of water such as to the amount of a 5% water change.

The water change amount varies person to person, it really depends more on your tanks needs. As for sump size and overflowing, you simply ensure that there is enough capacity in the sump so that it is capable of holding any extra water that drains down when the pumps are shut off (in other words dont fill the sump to the top)

Also the display tank should be able to hold all the water in the pump partition, in case the drain gets clogged. Doubtful to happen but why not make it 100% safe.

Also I don't know if you know this already but you have to top off with plain ro/di water. The salt doesn't evaporate, so if you top off with salt water you will increase your salinity.
