    The water change amount varies person to person, it really depends more on your tanks needs. As for sump size and overflowing, you simply ensure that there is enough capacity in the sump so that it is capable of holding any extra water that drains down when the pumps are shut off (in other words dont fill the sump to the top)

    Also the display tank should be able to hold all the water in the pump partition, in case the drain gets clogged. Doubtful to happen but why not make it 100% safe.

    Also I don't know if you know this already but you have to top off with plain ro/di water. The salt doesn't evaporate, so if you top off with salt water you will increase your salinity.
