My budy gave me his 29g bio cube. It's been set up for 2 years. He forgot about it after the first year. The deal was i do clearn up and i get the tank. The images attached are of something i have not seen before. It looks like a film forming over the rock. A more accurate discription would be to say it looks like candle wax dripped onto the rocks and dried clear. Before i can treat it I need to know what it is. If you have any ideas i would be grateful. DSC_0324.JPG

Cyanobacteria maybe? Is there any chance for a better pic and some parameter results?

Probably a form of sponge(encrusting or boring), but the picture is blurry!

    Same image croped in

The sponge theory might be right, but what kind of a sponge forms like snott to a rock without taking shape. I have somthing else under the rock, it looks like white strings crossing over each other, kind of like very thin spegetti noodles. The stuff in the image is different, it seems to crawl over the rock just enough to cover it/smother it. it looks a lot like snott or wax but it does have a sponge like texture. I have some on a different rock as well but it can't be photographed unless i move it. It's currently at the bottom of the reef. I ran my thumb over it earlier. It rubbed off very easy ... i'm hoping that's not how it spreads or i'm in trouble. Does this help?

    Is this it?

I found something on Coral mucus, but no online photos? It says Coral mucus functions as an energy carrier and particle trap in the reef ecosystem so maybe this is a good thing? What are your thoughts?

That sounds a little far-fetched. I've never heard this before. I think its some kind of sponge personally, or some rare algae. You never know what comes in off a reef on LR. I'm sure there's some undiscovered species on every piece we bring in:).

I think missionsix meant water parameters not camera settings. I'd like to try to help you out but I can't tell anything from the pic, sorry

I have about 3 diff sponges that grow in my tank that are orange, yellow, and white. We are all newb's in the fish world. with the entire ocean and all its life we would be lucky if there was a 1% diff from what we all know.

We know more about space than what we know about our oceans. Kinda sad when you think about it. Each piece of LR or coral always brings something new into someone's tank that at times no one has ever seen before. Sometimes good, but sometime it's bad. The way I see it, us reefers should get a grant for the wonderful work that we do on identifying & doing the research. That's it Matt, start 3reef.org It's time for our hobby to pay us back. lol...
