Pump #1 (left side) quit working this morning. Making a loud clicking sound as if the impeller lost it's bearing. Pulled the polishing filter out, pulled the black sponge filter out - both are clean. Pulled the pump out and sat it in the main tank with nothing but the pump and the hose with the 90 elbow on it. Same operation- noise and no water output.

Called the 1-888 number, no answer, no VM.

    Emailed them.

Can you tell if the actual motor still working, just the impeller is broken?

There is no water output, but the pump is making a continuous clicking sound.

I have to wonder, if this is the quality of RSM components, why should I consider a replacement pump from them?

Any one else have experience they can share?

It was probably a factory defect if it stopped working THAT quickly. All things considered, I'd expect a free one to replace it.

I expect a free one too. But, I'm still wondering if the manufacturer for the pumps delivered is the same as the ones they send for replacement.

As I write this, I also have to wonder - should I ask for replacement of both pumps?

Depends on the failure, if it is just the impeller, i'd say no. If it was something wrong with the motor side, i'd probably say yes.

Um, the pump I got as a replacement to my protein skimmer pump was a new model. It was made by Sicce instead of Hydor, and was designed differently externally.

It's the larger 600gph pump that sits in the left most chamber. After buying new MaxiJets to replace both of the RSM pumps, I took apart the impeller in an attempt to fix it. The magnet was no longer attached to the impeller.

I glue the two pieces back together and ran it. It would vibrate and then stop. If I push on the rubber cap that holds the steel shaft, the vibrations would go away. I tried to use a piece of thin plastic inside the socket where the rubber cap sits, to add some leverage to my manual actions. It worked for a few minutes, but started vibrating again. I'm guessing the additional glue on the impeller threw it off balance. I can't imagine that a little CA glue would cause an imbalance, or it was made that way. We'll never know. It's on it's way to the landfill.

The pump brand is Hydor. I didn't want to take a chance on RSM sending me more from this manufacturer. I didn't have a way of faxing the receipt, and was at the point of buying new pumps, I simply gave up.

Thanks for all of your suggestions and offers of assistance.

I would replace both of them, mine went out within 30 days!

Local dealer said contact Red Sea........

Skimmer pump will not function without removing impeller cover while on, then placing in water. When the power goes out I have to do it all over.

I wish I could find a non Red Sea replacement for the skimmer.
