    Hi!
I am starting a 75 gallon tank and got myself a Coalife hang-on skimmer as recommended on Foster Smith site. This thing is extremely loud and I am not talking about the silencer but the pump itself. I do not see myself as using this for very long unless this problem is fixed. I hate it that I have already spent a lot of $$$ getting it and I have to re-invest in a skimmer. It has been running for over 24 hours now. Any suggestions/tips??

    Thanks,

Have u tried taking it apart and checking for all the parts to be in their place? What kind of noise is it making?

    By the way:

Yes, as far as I can tell all the parts are in place the way they were supposed to. I even adjusted the flexble silnce hose so that it stays the way it is supposed to - a bit above the H2O level. The main problem is the pump noise; like a faulty, loud micowave oven.
    Thanks,

You will learn in this hobby the only thing worse than having to shell out big bucks for quality items is having to shell out extra big bucks because you didn't buy the best quality to begin with...Ive been there too bro

I bought a Coralife Super Skimmer for my brother in law and he never had this problem.
I suggest you contact them, directly. They may have an answer or replacement pump.

EDIT: I do not want to imply that these skimmers are fault free. My brother in law had problems with his pump after several months of usage, but nothing a deep cleaning could not take care of.

It's not uncommon for a pump to quiet down a bit after a few days of operation. It's generally not a terribly drastic reduction though...

Thanks for all your replies and help thus far. Will let the pump run for a few days and see what it does. This is a hang-on Super Skimmer by Coralife.

    Cheers!

Update: I found out that if kerp the pump away from the back-wall (by bending or curving the small rubber tube) of my aquarium it makes a little less noise. So now I have it so that the water intake is facing the front side...it is looking straight at the viewer. The noise is still there but a bit less after this adjustment. Central Aquatics customer support said they will send me a new impeller to see if that is causing the noise and vibration. Will let you know what happens next week.
    Happy 4th everyone!

Awesome! Thanks for the update, bud. I think the new part will help as I doubt that the position of the skimmer in the tank is what its causing the noise. Vibration, in my short pump experience is caused by a defect in the magnetic drive or propellers. Good luck and update when u replace it.
