Can anyone tell me if my water will eventually clear up from my diamond goby constantly sifting it? I just put him in my new 75 gallon tank and it is always cloudy. I woke up this morning and my water was perfectly clear only to come back to a cloudy tank after my classes. I have 80 plus pounds of live rock so it would be nearly impossible to catch him. Will this get better or remain forever cloudy? Thanks in advance

I don't understand, does the goby sift so much that it clouds the water? I've never heard of that before. How much flow do you have?

thanks for your quick reply man. i just converted 2 45 gallon tanks into this 75 gallon tank. i have 3 powerheads in my tank and it's enough flow for my corals obviously because they are doing fine. i'm just assuming the cloudyness is from my goby because ever since i bought it a week or 2 ago my 45 gallon tank was always cloudy. so when i set this tank up i though with all the extra water in my 75 gallon it wouldn't be as bad. my sand got mixed up when i combined the two tanks but then cleared up as of this morning, but like i said i came home this afternoon and it was hazy again?

I only had my diamond goby for about 3-4 weeks but experienced the same thing as you are. Mine got better after about a week of his sifting. I think that it just takes time for the fine particles to get filtered out. I wouldn't panic just yet. He was my favorite fish so far (so much personality). Best of luck and keep us posted!

    Regards,

I have a yellow watchman goby and when he sifts, the sand just falls back down immediately, and I have some pretty serious flow. If it hadn't been for Omgiv, I would have said that you had a bacteria bloom or dkh problems.

I have heard people say that their water was cloudy after adding a diamond goby but mine didnt cloud up at all. I imagine it will all clear up and stay clear in a few weeks, probably just the really small particles getting stirred up.

I think it also has to do with the size sand you use. For instance, in my tank with caribsea special reef grade aragonite (large grained sand), the sand just falls right back down when my goby sifts. I can also vacuum the sand and it doesn't even get sucked up. Just falls right back down.

With caribsea piji pink (very fine sand almost like a dust) I can vacuum the sand out just as easily as I can water. Plus it took ALOT longer for the sand to settle when it was fresh. I think that once the fine particles of dust are filter out (from being trapped under layers of sand) it should settle on its own. Give it time and I think it will clear up.

I have to agree with Blue Falcon on that one. My sand is pretty fine and I can stir quite a bit if I siphon the sand during a water change. I think you will be fine in a week or so.

thanks for the advice guys, it's probably me just being impatient for my new setup to look crystal clear. i would probably put up with the cloudyness just for the sake of keepin the goby:)

Mine kept things cloudy for a week or so and then it settled down. I also have the finer sand.
