since this is a 22 gallon tank i pre ordered a vortech mp10 which supposedly comes in late may. Hopefully it will be able to create a undertow on the long pulse mode to keep stuff suspended in the water column while not pushing current to harsh directly on the corals.

worse comes to worse ill convert the tank to sps. except for my duncans haha. will post pics after transition. I plan on buying the cayman sun system from hamilton this week while it is still for sale. 250 watt de with ballast, hanging kit, phoenix 14k bulb and digital timer all for 279.00 bucks. not a bad deal.

Do you understand what you are geting into here ? Simply chunking out the sand will do little other then kill your tank.. what is your bio load like in the system now ? and do you use a refugium ? And a sump full of aged rock work ?a good skimmer and not a coralife 125 or a CPR either. Its a lot to a bare bottom system aka Berlin system I posted on the other string to you also about rock worka nd the star board and the problem it can and will cause . Bare bottom means bare bottom for long term sucuess .

the livestock will be in a temp tank while i take the sand out. bio load is 2 small clowns and a flame hawk in a 22 gallon. running tunze 9002 skimmer and 2 phosban reactors. rock is 3 yrs old. also from talking to local reefers in dallas that went starboard they all conveyed the pros and cons of it. also that as long as you dont get thin starboard that warps that very little ever gets under the starboard. how will taking sand out kill my entire tank?

Read your other post. Question would be no one has seemed to be able to silicone it down?

What Tangster means, is that you have to make up for that loss of sand. Right now that sand bed is responsible for probably 1/3 of your filtration, if not more. You are going to need to make up for that in other areas (ie monster skimmer, tons of rock, big sump/fuge, etc).
How much rock do you have? How big is your sump/fuge?

it is a 22 gallon tank. i have never had stacks and stacks of live rock or deep sand bed. Sand bed is only 2 inchs deep. 15 pounds of marshall island live rock. i do 20% weekly water changes.
