I haven't bought LR in a long time.....years to be exact and it seems to be getting priced according to fuel prices nowadays:-/ I've been reading about mixing LR with Base rock. I'm thinking of buying about 50lbs of LR and about 75lbs of base rocks. what do you all think? Any tips and suggestions welcome;D

I see no problems with that. It makes it a lot cheaper that way. In my 75 I bought 35 lbs live and had about 45 base rock already.

honestly if i were to set up a new tank i would use all base rock and just seed it with coraline scrapings, and buy the fauna you want.

even if you use a lil live rock that still leaves the posibility for some bryopsis or anything else that spreads rapidly.

I agree with the thought of just buying base rock. If you want to start building up the bioload you could get live sand and add pods. The lr at my lfs is mostly problem rocks that customers bring in for store credit and they are full of bubble and hair algaes. I also am wary about buying coral attached to lr rubble.

I used L/R once and had to tear the tank down and my loving wife in her youthful formative reefing yrs used it also ! And it killed 2 maybe 3 tanks ? If I totally can not get this algae under control.. Look at Marco Rocks and just get base and make your own L/R its a total waste you can seed the system with a good source of fauna and get all the bio diversity that you need .. That Bio Diversity is a bunch of Hooey its all is going to die off an what won't die is in all tanks anyways . I have about all the fauna as anyone and I used not L/R . I have some bio diversity now its called Bryopsis Penneta ! From the Rock my wife used way way back..

It is coraline algae. You can seed your tank with a small piece of something with coraline on it and scrape it into your tank with the pumps off. It will scatter around your tank and start growing (if your parameters and all other conditions are met). good luck.

I'm going to be a getting Turbo snails to help me out with that. The LFS doesn't have any Caroline in their tanks that they can scrape off for me believe it or not. The only tank that has Caroline is their main display tank and it's all covered by the rocks:-/ They clean out all their other tanks to prevent all the caroline from growing. Hey! Anyone want to make Caroline donations? Heck, I'll even pay for it! Anyone? Anyone?
