After setting up several hundred of not thousand's of marine tanks I have to date never found a need to use anything alive to start my systems I won't use it . Just get a cup of live sand or rubble from a trusted source to avoid pest and pestilence

I used all base rock and all dry sand when setting mine up and did not add any live sand or rock to it. The only thing i added that would have had any life would have been my cheato and corals that i bought that were attached to rocks. My rocks are considered live now i guess but that was over a yr ago.

They are plants if you include all algaes in your definition of plants. Coraline algae belong to the class Rhodophyceae or "Red Algae."

All I had was about 25lbs of base rock and salt water, that's it. There is not need for anything live to start out with.
