I am a stalwart to the "no water changes", sorry but I have NEVER taken water out of my tank, it's only been going 4 months.
I never remove water from my othernfish tanks, just top them up when needed, I have never changed the water in my 55 tropical since 2009.

I don't lose fish or have any visible algae at all.

Don't know if I will get the same run in my marine though ?

My system went online 05/17/2010 & I have NEVER done a water change.. So, that is well over a year now. I loose 3gal of water a day from evaporation, that my ATO system takes care of. If that is the case, 21gal of fresh RODI water goes into my system every week. That is 84gal a month of new water going into my system. The salt never leaves the system. My clowns, blue-green chromis, & bi-colored angel are over 5 years old & even on my old 29gal I have never done a water change.

It also helps that all my skimmers have been over sized.

IMO water changes can lead to unwanted swings in Salinity, CA, MG, ALK, etc... Granted if there is a major problem & a water change is needed, it is what it is. But if your system is fine, why mess with it. IBM's golden rule "If it's not broken, don't fix it!"

I am with you a million percent !
I add about 2 salt buckets of fresh water every 10 days which I believe is about 75 litres a month , I use bottled water at work, as I don't pay for it :)

Sorry. :). But only the best for my kids ! LoL

You are only asking for more work by keeping the LR in the sump. As stated if you have enough in the DT then you don't need any LR in the sump. Yes you are courting creating a nitrate factory if you do not meticulously keep the sump and LR clean.

ok so after some thought I am thinking of building a platform for my skimmer to sit about 4 inches above the bottom of my sump then I can still use the entire section for a refugium. My question now would be how do I stop the bubble chamber from getting algae covered from the light shining on the macroalgae, and do you think this would be a better solution? The sump was a custom made George Geo sump made with black acrylic VERY nice sump thats the only reason I dont want to make a new sump. I sure miss my fuge
