The algae will eventually start growing on the base rock as well , and the base rock will turn into live rock after the bacteria in your tank is established. You will have to go through a longer cycling period with more base rock than live rock though.

    +1. Absolutely right.

Yeah, don't spend your money on purple rocks. Save your money, test your patience and spend your money on something else that you need. You will always need something in this gig. And this is a place where you can really do yourself a favor ITO money not spent.

They will turn purple in time and with proper water quality.

I would add just base. You can get the coraline later (shavings or even on frags). There's a good chance most of the coraline will die on LR when you first set it up anyways. Plus, with base, you dont run the risk of bringing in nuisance critters or algae's

I think I just read about someone buying LR and the CA turning white on them. Seemed like a bummer to me. All I could think of was "What a waste of money".:-[

I put in around 95/lbs of base Fiji and 9.5/lbs of LR that came out of an established tank. After my cycling was done, I had a few frags in a 10/g tank grow out tank waiting to be put in the DT and what I did meanwhile was shave the coralline off the frags to help with the seeding of the base rock. It does wonders!
