I was wondering recently if I could run a HOB penguin 150 power filter with filter and biowheel removed, but filled with LR rubble on my 10gal nano tank. The 150 produces 150 GPH flow which would aid in water movement, and from what I guess a tiny refugium, and help add oxygen to the water.
Its a thought, as I have it just sitting around not doing anything and Im always looking for new ways to help my still new nano tank..

    Thanks for the help..

Actually the rubble would do better than the media IMO. You could put it in a bag for easy lift out if needed. Can you run carbon at the same time? If it nixes the carbon function, I would say it isn't worth it. Otherwise, I say go for it.

I believe that I could still run carbon in a bag inside the filter. All carbon needs is for water to flow across it for it to be functional, correct?

What you really want is the water to run through it. A lot of times, systems are set up so that water, more or less, runs around it.

When I had my hobs I had removed the blue string media and put in rubble rock and it came live with pods and worms and all. It worked good for me. GL.

I have LR rubble in my HOB skimmer and in my HOB filter that I use for running carbon. Rubble has better surface area than big rocks do so I think this is very useful. It's also a great way to keep rubble handy for frags :)

However, fuge wise... it would need its own light on opposite timers as your main lights... So I don't know about putting Macro's in it... It could be set up though... just a thought.

I run a sponge, carbon, rubble, and chaeto in my HOB filter. Works great. Lighting may be an issue, but mine catches enough light just from the DT's lights that I don't have to do anything with it.
