Hey guys, my tank is about 2 months old. Last sunday I got Lugol's solution and added 2 drops of it (since the bottle says 1 drop for every 25 gallons of aquarium water and my 66 gallon tank has approximately 45 gallons after displacement). I just acquired the salifert iodine test kit today and it builds no color for iodate at all and barely any yellow tinge for iodide. Does this mean that both are zero? or does this mean Salifert does not work with Lugol's solution (The Salifert instructions says it does not work with some forms of additives. But Lugol's as far as I understand is molecular iodine and Potassium Iodide and so should result in Iodide and Iodate in the tank, right? and hence Salifert should measure it?) or does this just mean the 2 drop I added are already gone in the last 4 days? (into the skimmer? eaten by corals etc.?)

Any help with people using similar solutions would help. Also any advice on how to bring up the levels to about 0.4 or 0.5 would greatly help (how many drops etc.)

    Thanks,
    Manoj

I have one question, what tells you that you need to dose iodine? if there a reason you are dosing?

I am glad to see you are testing. That test kit is a pita. Sometimes you have to do the test a few times, to make sure it's right. Have you done their test the test part? It's what the extra vial of stuff is for. I forget what it's called, but I'm sure someone will chime in and tell you what I mean. :)

I do not see any extra vial of stuff in the box. It has 3 reagents, 2 of which are used for iodide and two for Iodate+Molecular Iodine. Am i missing something? How do I test the test kit?

cuttingras, so here's what happened. I got some LPS last week, and the LFS suggested I do an Iodine dip before I introduce the corals into my tank. So I got Lugol's solution. Did the Iodine dip etc. (none of that was introduced into the tank of course). Later I read the back of the bottle and it said it could be dosed into the tank for promotion of macro algae growth and I put in the suggested two drops (this was last sunday). Anyways, I wasn't gonna dose any more of it before i read up on it and tested it (Which I should have done in the first place ) So got the Salifert Iodine test kit and it failed to register anything. So maybe the skimmer removed it already? (I read that skimmers remove iodine aggressively). Anyways at this point, after reading the other thread, it looks like its nothing something I need to explicitly dose So I will just use the Lugol's solution for dips before introducing new coral. And water changes should take care of any that maybe used my tank residents. right?

Unless you have large number of sponges or gorgonians and are also aggressively using carbon, you shouldn't need to dose Iodine.
