It's funny that the LED fixtures cost so much when LED technology itself is so cost effective and cheap. 1W LEDs cost about $1-3 a piece, go figure. I know there is a lot of R&D costs that go into making these things, but I can't see charging some $3k for something that has a manufacturing cost that might be a couple hundred dollars.

on the surface it may seem so, and smaller lower output LED's are really cheap actually... but as they get bigger they get exponentially more expensive to produce...

however they keep getting bigger, cheaper, better, and brighter.

the lumenaqua starts at 899.99 at dr. foster and smith for a 24"
    they've also got the 36" for 1199.99

so you get two 24's for your average size tank and it'll run you 1800.00

not quite the 2 or 3k everyone's saying but i doubt it has the output of 500w MH for less than half the price with a very very respectable piece.

i saw a video demonstrating the color technique, what's really cool about it is you can fine tune R G and B so you get the precise mix of coloration you want not just Ushio 14k or XM 20k... as we all know each brand of bulb even though it has the same color rating has different values for the different parts of the spectrum, the kelvin rating is just kind of a snapshot of the overall light spectrum.

YouTube - LumenAqua High Power LED Aquarium Light

i think LED's are quite amazing.. they are ridiculously expensive, but in my lifetime i'm fairly confident almost everything will be lit by them... from street lamps to aquariums to refrigerator doors...

they keep getting better and cheaper every day it seems... thye have a lifespan of 50k hours, which at 12 hours a day would last you over 100 years.

(like any piece of electronic equipment would ever last that long, the circuitry would burn out way before the LED's did)

they actually use these things to grow pot instead of MH and HPS lighting... for the same reasons they use them to grow coral! more efficient, less heat...

they had a 75w light with red and blue spectrum LED's that performed equivalently to a 400w HPS sodium lamp in growth, quality and yield.

just a little food for thought...

the reason these fixtures cost so much is because it is so damn expensive to perfect this technology, everytime they make an LED that is 0.5mm bigger in diameter it's exponentially harder to get it to function properly.

i mean **** we've got LED tv's now, LED aquarium lights, LED under cabinet lights, LED's will be the one light source for all of earth's artificial lighting source in the near future aside from the R&D costs, they are far superior to every other form of artif. light.

Very interesting. Looks like it has some amazing potential. Integrate the adjust-ability into LED's in a MH fixture and I'm in!

    Led tv...great idea!

How cool to have a flat ( and thin ) tank cover similar to an LED TV turned horizontal and then be able to tune to any color/ kelvin output you want. Not to mention similated storms and cloud cover. Maybe evening 12month lighting programed in for breeders, or link to weather sites and it would automatic mimic for the species natural location. Then wirelessly send that information to heaters and coolers to match. I think the possibilities are endless!...I wish I had the money to buy a bunch of different stuff and tinker with the idea!...well, Ill just keep dreaming...sigh.
