Just happened upon this thread. Forgive me if this has been addressed already, but that return you have will be trouble if the power goes out. Since it's below the water line, it will continue to drain until the DT is nearly empty. You could add a check valve, but that would be another potential point of failure.

I think with an octopus, your terminations on the returns and the drain would have to be protected somehow. These are animals that habitually wrap themselves around things in the wild. Think of what would happen if it wrapped itself around your return pipe, or worse yet, around the top drain device. That would be nearly 30 gallons of water on the floor in no time at all.

Consider a 3-sided overflow box (like a regular one, with the back removed) siliconed to the rear, with a protected downward-facing 90-degree elbow for both drain and return. That would make it that much more difficult for the octopus to hinder their operation. (But still not impossible for these nimble buggers.) Unfortunately this would require the holes being drilled toward the top of the tank.

What I'm describing is simple in construction, but not so easy to describe without a picture. Hopefully you get the gist.

Either way you go, good luck! :)

Our LFS is getting in 6-8 Octos this week :D I would love to take one home...but don't have near enough resources or knowledge to make it happen. Going in to look at them is still going to be pretty sweet.

I have kept them in 10gallon tanks. They don't require much room.

Agreed, the ones that are sold in the LFS, usually dont need alot of room. The ref. book that I have states one species in a 10g and the other in a 20g. All depends on the species. Luna

I've heard around 30 g's is the "best" tank size for them. It also depends on the size and type of octo though that's for sure...you can't keep a giant pacific in a 30. :D

Its going to be a while, the stand is the "hardest" b/c of the measuring, cut, sanding, staining, sealing and then putting it all together. What hurts me, is that some days I dont have much time to work on it and some days at all. And in my case, Im going to do a "practice" run with FW before I do the SW. Thats why I stated hopefully in Jan 09'. ;)

Not much of a difference between a 30 and a 29;D. I've done some HW;)
