Would it be weird if i put some macroalgae in a HOB? just asking since i'm doing a small 10 gallon project in addition to my 29 gallon cube. I'm used to wet/dry filter so i dont have a sump for the 10 gallon, so im thinking maybe i could put some chaeto in the HOB and use another HOB for carbon and for aeration as well.

I used to have a modded aquaclear 70 hob diy to a fuge with chaeto and rubble on my 3 gal pico. I'd you google it you will see they are common. Good luck man

Put a little sand and rock rubble also. Make sure to use something to keep the macro in the filter. An aquaclear 50 or 70 would be great for this project you can mod the basket to keep the cheato in.;)

Well one more question; should i still keep carbon in the HOB or will the chaeto, sand, and LR rubble take care of that? I dont want to have any ammonia in my tank, and I'll just do weekly water changes along with that. (XD that rhymes!)

Nope not weird at all, a DIY HOB fuge is actually fairly common

Well yeah i know now XD but can someone plase answer my question? Sorry if i sound like an @$$ lol but I'd like to know so that i can get started with this project already. I have tons of LR i could use for the HOB and i can buy some chaeto so i wanna know: if my tank is cycled, will there still be ammonia? I assume that the good bacteria would be in the carbon, but if the carbon's not there then how cna i avoid getting ammonia spikes?

I really don't think you will be faced with significant ammonia spikes... Are you running mechanical filtration?
