    Hi all,

Starting to buy up parts for my 125g and need opinions on return pump. I have used a mag 7 for my 55 going on 2 years and it replaced a QuietOne rated for 785gph iirc(was not quiet at all). Any input on if i should stick with danner mag drive or are there better options out there? Price has to stay under 200$ and i would like 900+ at 6ft head. Not picky about submersible or external, just has to be quiet and relaible.

    Thanks

I use a Mag 12 on my 125 with 60 gallons in sumps. It came with the tank and is around 9 years old I believe. Quiet and reliable enough for me.

Look up speedwave DC- it is controlable and has a feed mode. Super efficient and quiet. Try to turn over your sump 10 or so times an hour- this should help you shooting for the right gph

Wow, speedwave is cheap too! Will the feed mode potentionally mess with my overflow? Going with a herbi/bean animal...

it shouldn't- what do you have in place in case the power goes out? The bean/herby auto restart

Mag pumps are known to run hotter than most comparable pumps, draw higher than average wattage per gallon pumped and can have vibration and noise issues. Having owned many of them over the years I can attest to all. I only use them for mixing new saltwater in the winter months now so I don't need to add a heater. They are reliable though, I will give them that.

There are much better pumps today with more efficient designs such as Eheim, Tunze, Sicce, Water Blaster, Octopus, Ocean Runner and several new variable speed DC pumps too. Mag was a good pump back in the day but they have not kept up with the competition and are being left behind, their design has not changed in 30 years or more.

Looks like im going with the speedwave DC. Its oddly similar to the reef octopus dc pump(other than some red plastic). Thanks for the input guys!
