So my Bullet 1 skimmer will be here this week :trampolin and I will be getting everything plumbed and ready for it to hook up this weekend.

I need to plan for pump location, and will be replacing the Rubbermaid sump with a 20 tall tank.

What's everyone's experience with the Mag pumps? I want as little heat transfer as possible, and need to decide if I am going to run the Mag 12 outside the sump - do they get very warm? If it's a scorcher I will run it out of sump, but if it runs cool, I won't go the extra step and just run in-sump.

Thanks for any and all advice!

It seems that if you restrict the pump than it will create lots more heat, but if it sits out it runs cooler and has more noise. All my returns are outside, I dont like pumps being in water. Plus mine arent submersible.

I run my Magdrive 18 inside my sump for yrs and have never had temp issues. I never understood that "myth". Magdrives can be installed either internally or externally, but they last longer when installed internally. I was told once by a LFS that they only last about a year when installed externally, but I cannot confirm. Luna

I'm sure having it in the sump will help cool the pump down. Granted that means heat transferred into the tank, but that will come out to maybe 1-2 degree of water (ºF that is), depending on water volume. It's no different than all the circulation pumps that are in the tank really.

    Interesting.

It does make some sense, I mean if you feel the pump (at least the ones I have in the sump, ViaAqua, MaxiJet) they're noticeably warmer than the water temperature. Instead of dissipating the heat into the air, the warmth will spread into the water instead.

The only reason I could think the pump would only last a year installed externally would be that the water helps cool them.

Anyone else have some thoughts as well?

I have no circulation pumps in my tank aside from the sump pump, reactor pump (tiny, makes no difference), and skimmer pump (again, small). My return pump is noticeably warmer, reactor and skimmer pumps are negligible an currently make no difference but I imagine the Mag 12 being a much larger pump than the one on my current skimmer would run warmer.

I have a mag 18 running my model 2 bullet that is in my sump. I also have 2 marineland 5500 series in my sump for my returns. These are 3 large pumps all in the water my water is 76 degrees and my heaters kick on from time to time so I dont see that there heat issue let alone one that you might need to worry about. Take into consideration my tank is 220 gallons also so it may allow my tank to dissapiate the heat better but this is just me giving my .02 based on my experience. The pumps are not heard at all. All I hear is the water coming back into the sump from my skimmer and my overflows as im maxing out the 1400gph rating on the tank.

Appreciate it - what kind of lighting do you have on there?

My lighting is the Marineland MH light so its 3 MH lights with 8 actinc lights. I have high temp lights on top of it. My room is warm but my water is not. I have a canopy on the tank although I keep it open unless people are in the room.

I run a Mag 9.5 that I only have at 80% output. It does get a little warm, but it doesn't heat the tank to any great degree.
