I'm thinking about switching from my VERY loud and seemingly slowing Iwaki WMD 40rlxt to a Mag 18. Anyone have any first hand experience with one of these? Are they as quiet and dependable as I have been reading about? I can get one used for $80, up my return flow by a 200-300 gph, and not have to worry about my ghetto PVC U-tube feeding an external pump from an un-drilled sump.

The master plan is to use the iwaki in a future water changing station to pump mixed saltwater from my garage to the livingroom . . . still have a lot of homework to do on that one.

Ran one on a skimmer once and it was pretty quite. Never had any problems. It did seem to add heat to the water however.

I am running a mag 18 as my return on my 125, as well as a mag 7 for my in sump skimmer. The pumps do their jobs as far as flow is concerned, but i feel as though they run pretty hot. My tank would stay at 82 with the lights off. Lights on would approach 86, so i had to get a chiller. They dont impress me with how quiet they are, but i havent really experimented with other pumps to compare the noise to either.

I use a Mag 24. Used as an external, mine is pretty loud, but in sump is very quiet.

I might be getting a chiller this weekend, so the heat thing shouldn't be an issue, I just hate the constant noise coming from the iwaki. I really hope the mag 18 will be enough to keep my two 1" HOB overflows draining along with feeding the skimmer and possibly the chiller and future phosban / carbon reactors through a manifold. I'll prob end up getting a separate pump for the reactors if I ever get around to getting them tho.

I also tried the Mag24, but it made sooo much noise that I reinstalled the 18. I tried everything to stop the vibrating noise, but to no avail.
