I found a pretty good deal for some mag pumps a mag 7 shipped to me for 45 less than a year on it and a 9.5 for like 60

now my tank is a 72g with a 20g sump...my skimmer runs a mag 3 which means it pulls around 350gph

the return pump will be T'ed off to my fuge and for flow control..my return isnt my source of water flow in the tank

    what do you guys think??

72g X 10 would mean 720 gph right ? so then the skimmer is pulling 350 and the head height of like 5 feet will put me a little around 600 ??
    mag 9.5 ?

I'd go with the 9.5 pump. On my 29gal I have a Mag 7 running that. Anytime you do a T, 45 or 90 degree connections you're losing head pressure.

very true. with the 45's and 90's then the check valve plus a union i think the 9.5 is a must

The friction loss on small diameter tubing is a much greater factor than a few 45's and 90's. If you have 1-1/4" return lines, you would find that the Mag 7 would even be too much flow. Never use the return size on the pump, which I believe is 3/4" on the 9.5, and 1/2" on the 7. It's a waste of the majority of the pumps power.

With a 3/4", the 9.5 will have a substantial reduction in flow, but it would probably be in line for what you need. It won't hurt the pump, but may cause more of a hum when running.

+1 to this. I run a mag7 and the output is 1/2 inch and my return plumbing is 3/4 inch. If the 9.5 has a 3/4 output, then I would rather use 1 inch return plumbing. Like barbianj said though, it wont hurt the pump restricting it with the 3/4 plumbing, but it may make it noisier to listen to.

That being said, if you are going to split the return to feed your fuge, then definitely go with the Mag9.5.

Remember, the 10x rule for return pumps is 10x the SUMP'S VOLUME. Not 10x your tanks volume.

I'd run a mag7 also just get a 1/2 to 3/4 adapter and thread it right in. That's what I did with my 9 only 3/4 to 1in. Restricting my mag24 to one inch was a big mistake the thing is loud as hell.
