I'm in the market for a new sump pump for my 90gal setup. I'm having a bit of trouble deciding between these two pumps

    Rio hyperflow 17HF: $58.00 shipped
    55watts
    about 600GPH @ 5' head

    vs.

    Mag Drive 9.5 $78.00 shipped
    93 watts
    about 750GPH @ 5' head

Can anyone make comments on quality or give alternative pumps for me to consider? I'm looking for at least 500GPH @ 5'. ;)

I have the Mag 9.5 and love it! I also have the Rio+ 2100 as a powerhead. I've heard Rio fail in a short time and most of the time is when you shut it off, they won't start after you turn it back on. They may have changed but if I would recommend Mag drive over Rio. It was leaking electric current in the water too. Some unfortunates lost their whole tank because of that. These incidents were not personal experience, just story from the net.....I believe it. :)

Rio fail but not the HF series.

a tid bit of info. Mag drive is a bit more reliable then the rio hf, however the Mag is much louder running. The heat created is about the same.

It all depends on the space you are looking to put it in, the money you want to spend and i guess how fast you need and can get them delivered.

I use the 17HF, very good pump. It's fast and efficient. As soon as you turn it on, this thing starts to work! Been using it for months now, zero problems.

My mag 9.5 is surprisingly quiet. Can't really hear it running.

Whel we are on the topic of sumps and pumps. I just picked up a 75gal and wanna take my extra 29gal and make it a sump/fung. With this set up I will be getting a new skimmer, if i got a AquaC EV120 with a mag-drive5 could I just put the output back up to my tank?

If you have head pressure that mag5 *may* not give you the GPH rate your looking for. Depends on your setup I think. How far up will the pump need to drive the return water?
