I am currently looking to purchase a pump for in sump application. I have heard that Mag Drive Pumps are water cooled and can increase the temperature of my water to the point you need a cooler. I have also heard that you can reduce the flow to your tank by using a ball or gate valve if the flow is to much. Which in my way of thinking would make the pump work harder because of back pressure. So here are my questions.

    My tank is a 55g tank. I will have a 29g sump/refugium.
I will have about 4.5ft of Head.
I am wanting to choose the Mag7

    1. How much does the pump cause your water temperature to increase?
    2. Will reducing the flow rate cause the pump to fail sooner?

Mag drives do get hot but a ball valve actually makes the pump more efficient. When you factor in heat and energy costs there are MUCH better options ime.
And no adding back pressure will not harm the pump. This piece of equipment will run 24/7 so efficiency is a must imo.

Well I am trying not to spend an arm and a leg for a return pump. I know I could use an external pump as long as I drill my sump, but the price difference is insane, IMHO. I know you also get what you pay for but in this instance I have heard that Mag Drive pumps are reliable.

I was having the same questions a few weeks ago. Ended up going with a Jaebo DC pump. It's variable speed and they get good reviews. People say they are quiet and cool. I don't have it running yet but the quality seems pretty good and the price was right.

I noticed the price is only about 11 more dollars than a Mag7. It does not seem like to bad of a deal..

i ran a mg 9.5 for years with no issues. it wasn't the loudest thing in the world but it did have a hum to it (with skimmer and overflow noises I could barely hear it)
now I run a mag24 on my 210g and I can tell you that this pump is loud. im looking for a replacement actually lol
as for heat ive never seen them increase water temp to where it became a issue. if the return pump is heating up the water to the point you would need a chiller you probably would have needed one anyways.

All submersible centrifugal pumps are product or water cooled. Some are more efficient than others so run cooler, use less power and are quieter. I am not a fan of Mag pumps at all after doing some quite lengthy testing on them plus many others. I still have 3 of the them but only use them for mixing new saltwater in winter months since I don't have to add a heater.

Comparable pumps would be the Eheim 1260 or 1250, Ocean Runner 2500, Water Blaster HY series, Tunze Silence, Sicce, Octopus and a few others. Stay away from Quiet One, Mag, Via Aqua and Rio or Rio Hyperflo if you want reliability, energy efficiency, quiet and better than normal head capabilities.

Remember, the return pump runs 24/7/365 so a few watts power savings can pay for the better pump over its lifetime plus not having to use a chiller or fans is a big plus too.
