My Mag-drive 5 (500 GPH) pumps out saltwater faster than it can flow back into the sump. I guess I need to get a Mag-drive 4. Anyone in the tri-state area want to swap? I will do it straight up, send me a PM.

Alternatively, is there a good submersible pump where you can adjust the flowrate out there?

ALL return pumps should have a gate or ball valve installed inline after the pump. This will allow you to dial down the flow.

You can buy ball valves at any home depot/lowes/ace etc. I do recommend a PVC gate valve though, as they are MUCH more accurate and easy to adjust. However, you would probably need to order one, or check with any local pool/spa supply companies to see if they have any.

if your using hose tubing, dont forget to pick up appropriate threaded hose barbs, teflon tape, and a threaded ball valve to make everything really easy.

I would look into the gate valve before buying the ball valve. I tried to shut mine down the other day and couldnt get the handle to turn completely closed, I had to pinch the hose shut to stop the water. I learned something from that, if it was an emergency I would have been in trouble. In 2 weeks I am going over to gate valves, I have to take the tank apart anyway when I move. Are there any drawbacks to be expected from using gate valves?

Ok, being new to this, I'm not sure what to do...I've found some ball valves here:

    Aquarium Plumbing: Threaded Ball Valves

the outlet of the mag-drive is 1/2" and is connected to tubing.

The ball valves seem to be threaded so I'm guessing I need some kind of hose barbs or something? Could someone explain what I'll need to buy to connect one of these valves in-line? Sorry for the noobie question!

    Thanks in advance!

1/2" x 1/2" hose barbs will work. home depot has all this, I prefer to get this kind of stuff in person. bring a small piece of your hose with you and make sure the barbs fit in the ball valve and your hose before you try them out at home.
