Ive recently noticed my MAG levels are hanging a little low. As my MAG levels have dropped and remained low, Ive noticed Cyano begin on my substrate. Is it true that higher MAG levels can inhibit the growth of Cyanobacteria? Current levels

    Nitrite 0
    Phos 0
    Cal 450

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
    Hi Ryland,

Can you point me in the direction of that information please.

For me higher mag levels seem to inhibit growth of all algae. This makes me wonder if it's all in my head.

    TIA

This is what I was asking. Is it true that higher MAG inhibits nuisance algaes? Seems odd that I have a cyano out break while I have consistenly low MAG levels. Sorry I think I had a typo up above!

    Ok Ryland lol.

Makes me feel a little better.

Perhaps we can look to the mechanism of why Kent Marine Mag is the only Mag supplement that effectively treats Byropsis, perhaps there is some similarities that apply to Cyano.

Interesting topic I will look around.

Following and BTW your tank looks awesome.

Ive seen the info on Bryposis but I am curious on the effects of cyano. It seems to me that the coincidence of having a small cyano out break in my DT while I have low MAG are too similar to ignore. (Ive never had a cyano out break in my DT other than when it first cycled.) I have noticed this for about 3 weeks. Nothing changed in my aquarium maintenance. 10 percent water change every week like clock work. Starting tonight I am dosing for MAG. I am raising the levels slowly over the next week. I hope to see some improvement. I know this is no controled scientific experiment but I thought it was interesting nonetheless. And thank you for the compliment on my tank! I am super pumped about how things have gone so far under LEDs.

Today I notice the Cyano appears to be spreading to my LR. Not real sure of the issue and I am hoping by raising my MAG levels it will stop the Cyano. Hopefully I dont run into a full blown out break here. Crossing my fingers. Nothing has changed in my aquarium maintenance. Weekly water changes like clock work. This just came out of no where and the only thing I could attribute to it is the low MAG. Anybody have any thoughts? TIA

I have had Cyano appear in my tank with Mag levels of 1500 before so I highly doubt it is coming from low Mag levels.Phosphates are more likely to be the cause.;)
