I am trying to find out how much Magnesium can be added safely at once. It is common to come across post (in my search for the answer) where people recommend no more than 100ppm in a 24 hr period... i get that part, but can i mix up a gallon mix in a bucket with ro/di water and pour it directly in my sump or does it need to drip throughout that 24 hr peroid?

    Thanks all -

You could pour it into the sump, since it's not going to hit the corals directly. However, I like to drip all my supplements, that way you don't get any locally high concentrations that could lead to precipitation. I usually mix them with RODI, too, again to avoid that locally high concentration thing. You can see the clearest difference in dripping a full strength Recipe 1 alk solution, vs one that's diluted 1 part alk : 3 parts RODI.

Some like dripping and that assures them the supplement is added slowly and gives them peace of mind. I add to the sump. It is a very safe way as the supplement has to make its' way to the return and will be in a diluted dispersive state. The dispersion into the display will be in a non-concentrated random amount.

I mix my supplements in top of water and dump them into the sump. I am looking at going to using dosers in the future.

Thanks again for the help and recommendations. It wont be too long before i'll have more questions in regards to the addition of calcium and alkalinity.

    Much appreciated ;)
