Do you have a microscope? As to whether or not it's coralline, if you can scrape enough off, you can do the vinegar test, that is scrape some off and drop it in some vinager. If it fizzles, it is likely calcareous. However, even if it is coralline, it is nongeniculate, so you need a microscope to id it. And even then, there are over 1500 species.

Thank u for the great suggestion. I see this all the time when cleaning pumps. Coralline makes a "fizz" as soon as I put it in water/acid and I guess pure vinegar would/should do the same!
This will be a fun test.

I don't have a microscope... only a magnifying glass and its a pitiful 3 timer.

1500 species seem like quite a bit to go through ;-)

The vinegar test was a fail. I scraped some of that stuff off and dropped it into pure vinegar and nothing happened. Then I scraped some of the pink coralline and after a few seconds, fizzzzz!

Later, I realized there were two types of things in the tank, with the same velvet color. So I took a sample of the second (harder to the touch, where the first sample felt like rubber and scraped off with my finger nails pretty easy) red velvet looking spot which I had to scrape with a pocket knife. This time it did fizz as well, only took a little longer than coralline.

So, now, my goal is to get this red "Algae" that didn't fizz out of my tank. I hate scrubbing the rock, but that's going to have to be done as i don't know how else I can get rid of this. And I know it can take over tanks, since that's what my in-law has all over his fish tank.

I'm running GFO in a reactor, have chaeto and mangroves... so, this velvet "algae" is getting food from the nutrients in the water? Or is some phosphate still floating around.

By the way, it's been exactly 1 week since I changed 2 out of 4 of the bulbs in my fixture. In a few more days (3 or so) I'll install the other two.
So I'll take pictures before that so we can see the different colors while changing them... don't know if anyone else is interested. Just thought it would be a good idea to compare old/ half old-half new/all new bulbs.
