    Anyone have experience with Majanos....

Appears to be a wide variety of them...most of the ones I have seen on the web are much smaller then the type inhabiting my tank. On the whole they are described a nuisance that will quickly spread throughout a tank.

Unlike others generally depicted, mine are 4-5 inches across, reddish in color and often bubble tipped. In fact they look just like a small bubble tip anenome.

Mine spread by division, albeit very slowly... in 3 years I have only 7-8 in tank. After dividing they seem to want to find a quiet place in the tank where there is not much else living.

I do not go out of the way to feed them at all and I run a very "clean" tank.

My maroon clowns love them and spend lots of time working and "wallowing" in them.

I am just wondering if these are Majanos at all (?) or I just have a very benign varitey.

    I like mine.

(I have experimented with Joe's Juice to rid myself of a couple just to make sure I could get them under control if needed...it works great) --- so far not much need.

    Thoughts...?

I cannot say that I am very knowledgable with Majano anemones...but from what I hear, they are not as much of a pest when compared to Aiptasia. From what you are describing it is hard to tell, can you post some pictures of the little buggers up close? If they are splitting very slowly and not causing any problems with other corals around them...well maybe they are not cause for alarm. Though, many might just say, "better safe than sorry".

Had a bunch of GSP shrunk back from invading manjos in a tank I maintain. I would guess that if they can out-sting GSP they are pretty potent.

I found them to be quiet the contrary. They are more of a pest than aiptasia because they're harder to kill. That being said, I only had them bother sps corals. Soft corals like leathers seem to be able to resist their stings.

I can't make a positive i.d. on the anemones in the picture though. Is a close up pic possible?

I don't think so but a better picture would definitely help.

Sometimes they have bubble tips...sometimes not.

There is another anemone that is commonly sold in the hobby that goes by the name "tulip" anemone. Supposedly it isn't a majano but can spread like one so I wouldn't want it in my tank either. There are pictures on this thread of these two anemones under the topic entitled "Majano/Tulip Anemone." These pictures are the best representation of the tulip and majano anemones that I've seen. The first pic is of what I know as a tulip anemone and the second is of what I know as "a. majano". That's not to say that yours will look exactly the same as the anemones in the picture but the majano in that picture looks EXACTLY like mine did.

I've had 4 or 5 majano's in my tank for several years. I never paid them much attention because they weren't spreading or bothering anything. In the last 6 months they have gone wild. My 4 or 5 has turned into 40 or 50. They are becoming a nuisance and I spend quite a bit of time killing them off. My advice, get rid of them now before you're in the situation I'm in. Good Luck.
