depends on whether or not you consider the hours put in as work. in your basement aquauculture just won't be the size you would need to make a good per hour rate. But if the time is all hobby fun anyway, then who cares? Otherwise, with aquaculture you need to go big to cover any sort of costs....aquauculture is a high cost/high risk field. Very high risk....so you need to be large to manage that risk at a statistical level for long term success.

    thats not necessarily true

the flip side of the coin would be to go small, but specialize in something expensive that people want

dont forget the startup & running costs, (ie all the equipment, livestock, chemicals, power, etc) One LFS owners I know, have 30+ 100g tubs for coral growing.. I hate to see that power bill.

yes, if your smart and personable and are not afraid to take a risk, there is money to be made. there are many member/sponsors on this site and i'm sure most started it as a hobby. but if its just money your after, there are easier ways to make it...

good points^^ also, as someone who comes from Florida I might not be familiar with the size of a basement. In my head it looks like a single car garage. I am thinking to make "a lot" of money it would have to be at least 800sq feet of tank room/shipping area etc... even if they were premium corals. Anyway, easing into it like benbabcock mentioned seems like the way to go. Cover risk as you grow....I wouldn't start with premium anything though...The risk there isn't just the coral dying, the risk is price volatility. By the time it grows will that chalice make you the $100 an eye it goes for now?

I doubt it not with corals because of the lighting and cooling cost.
