I will have lots of Live Rock, but no DSB or PLENUM in my tank.....scared of crashes...... :-/

    12 x 7 inches won't do much, eh? Well, i wanted a pod farm anywhooo. ;D

    John,

I agree in theory that the area is small. I think the macroalgaes would do a whole lot more than the sand bed. With that said, any improvement is an improvement. Birdlady is going to have to decide if the additional denitrification of adding a DSB is worth the hassle of taking it down eventually. I truly am clueless as to how much denitrificaton the sand in this fuge will provide.

    Birdlady,

I know because the title on the link says Ecosystem 3R. It also looks like one with some sand on top.

Fear not my good Birdlady, there will be no arguements from me :)  It's spelled Crikey BTW

    Inwall,

Anthony Calfo descibes an alternate denitrator in his book by using ( this is from memory ) a sealed bucket almost full of sand, you slowly pass water over the surface.  It is the same principal as the coil type denitrator.  IMO that is the only chemical benefit you would get from this set up, and with the water flow the denitrating benefit would be minimal, if at all.  Now if we are talking about an extra place to grow critters and stuff, then I think it's a great idea.

My skimmer sits on the intake side of my sump/refugium and no micro bubble issues as the baffles do a good job of eliminating before getting to the reurn pump.

I would place the skimmer before the fuge. Otherwise, little critters, such plankton, could get sucked up before they ever reach the tank.

Check out the diagram I put together for a 20gal aquarium sump/fuge:

I have since upgraded the pump to a MAG 9.5 and will be putting the skimmer outside of the sump. ;)

I'm just in the middle of doing the plumbing today, and will post a picture tomorrow sometime.

    Good luck with yours Birdlady!!
