400 watt bulbs are too much light especially for a shallow tank.

If you are using a 400 watt bulb you'll need to hang it high up. Why not save on the electricity and use a 250 watt bulb and have it hang at normal height? With a Lumenarc III reflector it'll easily cover a 48"x24" tank.

 

im using LB's with 400w reeflux se mh on e ballasts for both tanks. the mini LB on the frag, the large LB on the main tank. both will have to be height adjusted to have the correct par. mini LB are good for a 2x2 footprint, large LB are good for a 3x3 footprint. LB's disperse the light better than lumenarc III reflectors. you still didnt answer my question,

 

700 PAR at the bottom with either light is the same. It's a waste of money to have a 400w bulb being run at 18" off the surface than a 250 or 175w bulb. Lumenarc's have more spread than the LB's but LB's produce more PAR at the same height. LB's are a spotlight while LA's are a floodlight.

with the 400w the spectral analysis is flatter, more even, no shadows or dead spots, wider, and constant at a desired height to produce the correct par at shallow depths. instead of a spot light effect, pin points, tight groups or rings with the 250w or 175w since their closer to the water.

can you show me scientific data that proves otherwise?

ive already read that article and many others. can you show me a spectral analysis using LB's pertaining to the 250 vs 400 reefflux that suggests using the 250 instead of the 400? and the befefits of using the 250 instead of the 400? one last final question, do you have any sps's, if so do you have pics?

i'm using 2x250W+1x400W on a 18" tank tall and the bulbs are at 6 inch to the water and corals grows so fast that before the "boiled" i could make 100 frags every 4 months.. and my ca-reactor used nearly 10 liters of calcium carbonated every 6 months (on a 120g tank..)
