So, I purchased this mandarin which was bening sold as a "green mandarin" however to me it looks more like the one commonly described as red, though they are sometimes hard for me to distinguish. Can someone please help me ID this one?

Also, do females have a short spike on the top fin?

    Thanks!

Yep that one is definitely the red variation and I think the females have a shorter spike on the dorsal. I'm 90% sure of that lol

green and red are just color variation of the same specie. It's just a matter of seller's decision to call "green" or "red"..

Then there is the psychedelic mandarin which is green too, adding to the confusion.

Looks to be a red mandarin to me.

yeah def looks like the red variation to me also, both the red and green psych variations are gorgeous fish, wish they weren't on the tougher end to successfully keep.

red on the left, green on the right

Usually the reds seem to be more exspensive, so I was happy that they sold her as a green, haha.

She's doing well with plenty of pods in the tank, and is starting to take frozen enriched brine shrimp. So far doesn't seem interested in mysis, but will keep trying as I know these are more healthy than brine shrimp.

Here's a video I made of her exhibiting odd behavior. You can see the short dorsal spike, which looks shorter than most males I've seen but longer than most females I've seen as well.
