make sure you buy one that you know is eating frozen food, then you can supplement its pod diet with frozen food

Phyto... for what? pods in the DT? the mandarin and 6 line most likely would have eaten them already. Mind sharing your secrets to success?

no, its very difficult to train a mandarin, you dont want to do that because some cant be trained and if you get one of those then your screwed

I'm assuming you hadn't read my other post; always have a buyer or a taker on hand with an established tank with pods that can keep a mandarin if it doesn't work out.

I will probably get blasted for this post but i believe the idea of this community is to share and discuss. Here it comes. I kept 2 mandarins in a 34 gallon tank. YES I had to do extra work for them but they both survived for 6 months in the 34. I then upgraded to a 55. No problems. YES I got them to eat frozen and had to "spot" feed them at least twice a day and YES I added pods. I did loose 1 to "jumping" but the other is live and well. Granted i have a 180 now. My point is this....You can get away with having one but you will need to go the extra mile and expense. EVERYDAY. not once in a while. To me it was worth the effort but there will be effort. EVERYDAY. just my 2 cents. Good luck.

I'm blasting no one. But thanks for sharing. But here we're talking about 1 mandarin, yet keeping 2 mandarins in a 34 for 6 months shows it's possible to keep at least one. When you spot fed was it in in the morning and then afternoon or night? I'd still keep a good pod population either way and feed whatever frozen they would eat. In my opinion cyclops and/or brine shrimp mixed with garlic would sound tasty if I was a fish, but even the pickiest may not go for it at all.

I read that a good way to get one on prepared food is to mix live and frozen brine-shrimp and hope he eats one of the frozen one's by accident when he's going for a live one.
