It depends on what you want. Keep in mind i spent over 4 times the value of the fish each month to keep it alive. It was worth it to me. Some of my "fish" freinds thought i was nuts. To each there own.

I have a 120 set up for over a year before i got my mandarin. Within a few months he became so efficient at eating the pods he began to starve. I got him eating mysis now but i have to feed him so much, because he is slow and gets out competed, that it would be almost impossible to feed him on a daily basis in a smaller tank. Buy an ORA mandarin they eat pellets supposedly and the food would be cheaper (i used to go through a bottle of live copepods a month)

HMMMM I had the 2 mandarins, a clown, 2 chromis and a cardinal fish in my 34. Lots of water changes and patients kept it all going. Also it helped a great deal to have a supportive wife who helped when i was on the road.

kudos to you and your wife, but its just alot easier to start off with one mandarin, think abbout it like this, you get a mandarin to eat frozen, flakes, pellets, whatever, but it dies of starvation because of too much competition. im just saying trying to make it as easy as possible for him/her

Well it won't be much of a problem if it's the only fish in the tank. As for ORA mandarins...

I don't think he's encouraging to get 2 mandarins, but having success with 2 mandarins shows 1 mandarin can be done as long as you do maintenance and have the proper foods

i agree it was not easy. And you need patience. Not sure if i would do it again. I also have 2 macaws and one thing those birds will teach you is patients. it took me 3 months (about an hour a day) to teach one of them to pick up a ball and drop it in a basket.
