$30 for about 1000 pods....it will mow thru 1000 pods in a few days... 30X3= $90 off by 10 bucks...quit being irresponsible and promoting bad fish care behavior...a mandarin needs more than 8.5G just to swim around...learn a little before you promote "going for it"

As som3 3reef3r said it isn't enough space for him.

Then for the feeding, they have to constantly feed all day and you'd need a huge breeding tank for pods and a better way of moving them.

Sorry, another comment. It might be possible; but is it right? Think about the mandarin's position. Think: would you rather live in a box, and eat like a homeless person, or live in a mansion, wherever you want, and eat like a king? Might be a bit drastic, but it works.

did any one even read my post? I will have a 40g fuge on a 90G system and an ats on it. Have any of you see how many pod people wash off those things? I agree with you Corailline, but what I'm picturing is a space has enough pods coming into it and not enough room for them to hide. I don't think it would miss the swimming room if it was enough food, also my lfs gets ones that eat frozen more often that not, but I won't rely on that because I know that's not enough even if I get one of them. I'm not asking any of your opinions about if it should be done, but if it was done what would the numbers be on how it would be done.

ultimately, you are going to do what you want. But, I would hope after hearing the arguments made on this thread you would not consider the manadrin at this point. It can be done, but that fish will be pissed. The are other fish that would make be suitable for a tank of that size.

didnt realize the cheato/pods would be supplied from a different system. based on your first post, i though it was fuge on the 8.5g. I dont know enough about manadrin's to say much more.

Dont think he read my post..... i dont how to put it but not only do they need lots of LR they need room. and in an 8 gal a full grown mandarin could get from left side to right side in about 3 "scoots".

btw i DID answer your question.....

    Mandarin in a 10 Gallon...

Here's what a comment says by the guy who owns the mandarin:
"ive had him for just about 6 months.... he eats frozen mysis and brine shrimp. his weight fluctuates if im not around to obsess on his diet... i DO NOT recommend a mandarin in a tank with less than 100 lbs of live rock for a natural diet. its very very difficult to maintain a healthy mandarin in a small tank."

Now he doesnt recommend it but as you can see it is possible. Again i'd go for a 10 gallon just for a little extra space (IMO it helps). But I am wrong here because this mandarin eats frozen. This could really be possible if you get lucky and get a mandarin that eats frozen, while pods are also for an additional natural food. To keep a mandarin with its natural food you should raise lots of pods in your fuge.
