dont grow them in substrate if you have a tank, as the grow they can easily compromise the silicone seal. I like the styrafome floater better

The growth tip should be approx 10percent out of the water and the rest of the seed should be in the water. Let it sprout down to the sand even a floating plant in the styrophome is fine. I will recomend getting a spray bottle and misting the leaves as they sprout. I have not done this on some and they died but the ones I did are flourshing. I still mist every other day. I am going to fla in a month and looking to grab a good 100 or so and adding to mine. I dont have a dsb but mine grow fine with this little care. They will grow.

I agree 100%. Those roots can get thicker than your index finger and can pop the silicone seam leading to a leak. I trim my just above the sand bed and they are growing fine. Here's a photo of when I originally added them to my sump. There's an air gap of about 1/4 inch underneath the styrofoam so the water can flow through the fuge unimpeded.

They aren't that picky, as long as the red part is the in the water and the growth tip is not in the water they will be fine. I second the keep the roots trimmed. I have a massive tree growing right now (gets natural sunlight), and the roots it is sending down are as big around as a pencil.
