    I bought mangrove spouts over a month ago. They are in my hang on the back refugium. They have shown a small amount of root growth but now leaf growth. Are they dead!? why are they growing so slow

    No they are not, the roots will grow maybe 5" before the top starts to sprout. Thats what mine did, even had one that sproouted 3 branches from the sides rather than the top. Once they do sprout out new segment leaves will come every week or so.

    +1 mine took quite a bit of time to start some root growth, but after a couple inches of root growth the top followed suit.

    Are they still exporting nutrients without roots and leaves?

    I would assume they would have to get the sustenance to grow from somewhere

    Mangroves don't export nutrients, unless you're removing them from the tank. They don't even use enough to count for much. Macro algae does far better.

    Mangroves look better than a big ball of chaeto though
