sitting by his tank most of the day for a month did the trick. im going to try and hold him soon :)

my dream mantis tank would be a 90 long divided up into 4 mantis tanks with pvc jungle for each. included would be a Tetrasquilla mccullochae, my favorite mantis. hes a spearer and youre more likely to find a moon rock than one of these amazing mantises. hes pure white. so cool.

The only "pet" mantis that would ever have a chance of breaking glass is a fully grown Peacock. I'm talking around 7+ inches long. There are bigger ones than a peacock that could break glass, but they aren't exactly a mantis people want to keep as pets.

Anyways I'd feel perfectly safe with 3/8" glass or 1/4" acrylic with a fully grown peacock. All you'd really need to do is put down a layer of extra acrylic on the bottom so the mantis doesn't stand a chance of breaking the bottom when in "digging mode". We've got a 3.5" G. Smithii in a 14 Biocube and he doesn't even stand a chance of breaking that sucker.

I used to get mixed crabs sold as octopus food at ccritters.com for $.30/crab but I just checked and they are up to $1.00/crab. Lame. At that price I will get live shrimp fishing bait, its like $2.99 for a dozen. I think my mantis would really enjoy eating a shrimp... I may try that. He loves to chase (and eat) tiny feeder ghost shrimp.

If you have a good relationship with a local fish store ask them for all their bad crabs.
