Anyone know from experience or from seeing personally if a mantis shrimp and a trigger fish (picasso) could or will co-exist? I plan on setting up a mantis tank here in the coming weeks and am thinking about moving my triggerfish to the new tank as well so that I don't have to worry about him starting to go after my corals one day.

Definitely not 2 species that can live together.

triggers eat shrimp and stomatopods alike. if the mantis is big enough im SURE it could kill a triggerd eventually. you will lose one of them eventually. which, im not sure yet.

I would strongly advise that the two don't live together. As gexx said...one's gonna die.

I have heard of someone with a picasso trigger with a larger O. scyllarus (peacock mantis). When I talked to him they were new to the tank and I haven't heard from him in a long time so I doubt he is still having success with it.

triggerfish are known to prey on smaller mantis shrimp. Both animals are highly aggressive and will not back down from a fight. The biggest problem though is the mantis would not be able to protect itself during a molt from a trigger. Triggers are smart and have the jaws to undo whatever the mantis used to seal off his burrow. (usually a piece of a shell or sand)

+1 depending on the sizes of the 2 1 will eventually kill the other. most likely the trigger killing the mantis during a molt.

Thanks for the info everyone, was hoping that since both are aggressive animals they would do ok together but didn't think about while the shrimp molting how susceptible he would be.

Very susceptible. Immediately after they shed they have VERY little protection and don't like to move around much. If the trigger found it, it would most likely be a goner.
