First of all im not positive about this. With that being said, I thought I read somewhere that studies were done on this and it was the larger species of mantis shrimp that was tested and it was a small cheap aquarium just to prove a point. I think a standard 10 gallon aquarium or larger with a standard sized mantis shrimp you will be fine. They probably held food on the outside of the glass just to entice it and see if he could break the glass.

But lets wait for someone who has done more research on the mantis shrimp.

I've never had one break the glass, but then again, I had one hit the glass so hard it sounded like a rock hitting your windshield at 70mph. It scared me enough that I removed him.

    Cheers,

    Don

I've kept many mantis species over many years. With some of the larger species, it's not a good idea to keep them in el-cheapo tanks with thin glass. However, as a general rule, this like most things that most people say about mantis, is incorrect. Remember basic high school physics. F=MA Force equals Mass X Acceleration. The smaller mantis just don't have the Mass to put into that equation to make them dangerous.

Aren't you planning a 10 gal? Anything that could break the glass would be too large for a 10 gal. Peacocks can break thin glass like <1/8". The only time you run into glass breaking problems is when you have too large of a mantis in too small of a tank.

I'm not Jwin, but Princess is a N. Wennerae or Carribean Rock Mantis like my Mr. Fister.

Peacocks can break 10 gal glass. 10 gal is also too small for a peacock. 30 gal is minimum for a peacock.
