i am also setting up a mantis shrimp tank and if you talk to anyone who has them (even triplemom) they will say that they are worth it. when jwin and stepho get on here then hopefully they will be able to go in more depth for you! a twenty would be pretty nice mantis tank!

It really depends on the species you get and the individual. They can be great fun to watch, or they can be shy and rarely leave their den. With a 20 gallon you could keep any of the smaller Odontodactylus species which are fascinating to keep. They are masters of aquascaping and den building.

"...if you can supply a tank with a large, open area, these small Odontodactylus species are probably the most interesting of all stomatopods to keep."

They are fascinating! My son (Jwin) wanted one last winter - he ended up getting a LFS rescue hitchhiker mantis of the common Caribbean variety. She can be kind of shy, but is always willing to grab a piece of krill off the tongs. I just got a Gonodactylus smithii to put in a Biocube 14. This guy is much more active already and has been busily putting his den together since Friday. He's coming all the way out now, but he doesn't like me filming him yet. I think their colors are amazing.
