Well a mantis shrimp can fit in a 29g but 2 maroons, maybe. Maroons get up to 6" big.

    My answers would be

Yes - there are Mantis shrimp species that are going to be OK in a 29 Gallon tank

Maybe - the instances of Mantis shrimp cracking tanks have been reported, so I could not say for certain it would not happen - it could, its rare, but it could happen

My pistol is large and isn't going to crack any glass.

My response is that even if you get a smasher and if you don't keep it fed it will eat the clowns. There are going to be those that will disagree with me but I have a O. Havanensis and I keep her hungry so I get more visual ops. She has a tank mate, a yellow tailed blue damsel. She is constantly trying to find ways to get to that fish. I've even seen her try to swim it down on more than one occasion.

Clown Mantis shrimp include fish in their natural diet so keeping 1 on its own in a 29 gallon would probably be a better option IMO

The general rule of thumb with salt water is 1 inch of fish not including tail for every 4 gallons of water
thus in a 29 = 5 inches of fish in total - and you should allow for max adult potential size

there are smaller species of Clowns than the Maroon, but again the Mantis would pose a threat to them

role reversal IMO - the Mantis then becomes the prey rather than the predator
some triggers are considered reef safe in that they dont bother corals
but even those ones may enjoy a shrimp snack
