Mantis Tank setup questions

    I'll do my best to look at it tomorrow. I just acquired a reference book on stomatopods that has the key. The problem is a lot of the determining factors have to due with small hard to see features. Number of teeth on the telson for example. It is really hard to determine species unless you have the animal in a little plastic container and can see everything clearly without it moving around.

    EDIT: thumbing through the book for kicks and giggles there is a species very similar to G. smithii which is called G. acutirostris which my book doesn't get into details about. The difference:

    Apices of anterolateral angles spiniform - G. Acutirostris
    Apices of the anterolateral angles blunt or sharp, but not spiniform - G. Smithii

    You wouldn't by chance have a high resolution picture of the carapace from above would you?

    That clears it up, so don't even bother feeding him then? Or try to, at least.

    Can they go without food for that long?

    If they are molting they will not eat so attempting to feed them would just stress them out. Mantis shrimp can go for very long times without food.
