mantis?

    ive never seen a mantis shrimp that looked like these guys, but i got 3 of them in my box of live rock and after gettin up early this morning cos of the noise they make on the glass im quite happy to get rid of them
    but are they infact mantis?

    edit: they have 2 claws which i have never seen on a mantis 1 very large 1 and a smaller 1

    Nope! pistol shrimp my friend! live symbioticly with some gobies but also are known to attack other shrimp!

    thnx for the ID i guess if they eat shrimp there definitly goin
    are pistol shrimp known to bang on the glass?

    its a bit wierd ive heard em bang on the bucket i put em in and they sound like they could do some serious damage

    google pistol shrimp. I think they are cool and personally, i would put them in. You can buy them at my local fish store for about $15 per shrimp! IMO they are reef safe. I have some in my tank. They make a popping sound, which comes from the shrimp itself (like a cricket)

    yeah, they make noise, hence their name, lol. Its actually them snapping their claws really fast to ward off predators!

    my display tank that all this new rock will be going into has shrimp worth alot more than $15 and are much more attractive ill take em to my lfs and they can deal with them

    plus that popping noise drove me nuts for the last 3 nights :p
    kept me up all night waiting for a smash followed cloesly buy the sound of gushing water :p
    if i dont get rid of these ill never sleep again lol

    Sell them back to your lfs. Some people buy these shrimp on purpose :)

    But yea those shrimp are very cool i'd keep at least one of em :)
