I dont have just one piece, thanks...i also have had a Regal that did the same thing...just fed them garlic and they fought it off...now all my older fish are actually immune to it (yes fish can become immune to the parasite)...i dont need science to help me prove my point..i have 2 healthy fish to prove that, and countless other people have had success with it as well...so while you resort to harmful chemicals..ill stick to my more natural process...my fish speak for themselves

There's no science in saying "Ich was cured due to addition of garlic; it worked for 50% of people, and it didn't work for another 50% of people" when there's literally nothing scientific about what happened in your tank.

There's no control group, no same-species subjects for the test, variance between the environments the fish were in (if you take the group to mean "your tank and other peoples", anyway), and thus no way you can prove a causative relationship between "adding garlic to the food" and "elimination of ich".

I can argue that your fish had their natural immunity fight off the infection and garlic had absolutely no effect on them, and you can't say, with any concrete logic, that my conclusion is any more valid or invalid than yours is.

What I can say, is that copper salts are proven to work, time and time again, in laboratory and real world conditions, at eliminating any variety of ich that doesn't skip the tomite stage.

You can't disprove what I'm saying, and you can't prove what you're saying, so what should the novice aquarist do? Use a solution with absolutely no proof and a large number of detractors, or one with boatloads of proof and no detractors?

you say no detractors, but QT a fish is VERY VERY stressful to the fish and its possibly healthy tank mates, causing them to fall victim as well...and Garlic DOES make an immune system stronger...this works in humans too...does copper kill ich...absolutley...but can you fight it with natural garlic as well..i believe yes, because i've seen it first hand..plenty of times, not just in my two fish. I personally would rather have my fish fight off the parasite in a natural way, than to possibly do liver damage to them using copper...difference of opinions, but you are not going to change my mind by trying to belittle my opinion on garlic

Might I add you both have points. Copper can be harmful to some fish, and not so much to others. But garlic itself Helpts boast the immune system of fish because it helps them eat, which then in turn helps their immune system. I refuse to use copper on my Tangs because most tangs dont make a large enough mucus layer. Which then in turn the copper can hurt their skin for prolong doses...

Just throwing that out there. CopperSafe isnt your normal coper medication. How it does have copper in it yes. It says to not use it on any inverts in a tank that dont have an exoskeleton. Therefore I believe she wants to know if it has an exoskeleton.

First, garlic is as natural to a saltwater system as olive oil or asphalt - as in, not whatsoever. It doesn't grow underwater, and the compounds unique to garlic don't occur in natural seawater. In fact, garlic is only grown in significant quantities near two major reef systems (Thailand and the Red Sea), so I don't know how "natural" can even play into a legitimate argument for the use of garlic in a reef system with a biotope of anything other than "mixed", "Red Sea", or "Thailand".

Taking that a step further, copper and copper salts are actually present in seawater in minute quantities. Despite them being minute quantities, there's a larger concentration of copper in the ocean than there is of any compound unique to garlic that you might happen to find int he ocean, especially considering that there's no way that Allicin, the antibacterial (NOT antiprotozoan, as cryptocaryon is) agent in garlic, would last long enough to make it to a tomite of crypto.

Second, proper QTing of a fish is the only way to prevent the entry of any disease into your main tank to begin with and will prevent a "fish crash" due to crypto, and even better will prevent amyloodinium (much faster-spreading ich-like disease) and every single other disease, parasite and assorted hitchhiker, every single time. "Ich is always present" is absolutely not true, especially if you QT and treat each fish as appropriate.

Third, if you think I belittled you whatsoever, I hope you read this paragraph twice and learn what "belittle" means, since it has absolutely nothing to do with a presentation of facts laid out to support a point or the discourse involved in laying out a coherent argument. "Belittle: to regard or portray as less impressive or important than appearances indicate; depreciate; disparage. " I never attacked you personally, just the "garlic cures ich" "fact" that you present as a solid Fact despite not a single iota of scientific evidence to support your claim.

I've used two medications in my tank that have worked fast and safe. I had a fish with ich and I used Kick-Ich, it's a reef safe product that I put in the tank and ich disappeared.
I had my Asphur Angel get a cloudy eye and I used another reef safe product called Maracyn Plus by Mardel. Great product and within a few days the cloudy eye was clear.
Whatever you do stay away from putting copper in a reef tank. That's simple 101 for reefers.

It took less than five minutes out of a weekend.

My copper was the only thing that saved my remaining fish, so I don't need luck; unlike some people, I have reassurances based on fact that my medication (copper) works.

I would also recommend you don't belittle someone in the post directly after you accuse them of belittling you, as well. It's tasteless.

Eh, I didn't see any belittling. I also didn't see any reason to press the red button and hand out negative karma, so please forget that it is an option. Negative karma yields negative results. There are many differing opinions on how to prevent/treat ich. There is the scientist and the organic(hippy) approach. My approach, keep a stress free environment and make sure your tank health is optimal. Ich doesn't have a chance. Without the use of either, I never worried about adding a fish with a spot or two to my sytems.

A word on stress: It is the leading cause of death in the United States, fighting battles that you cannot win, ultimately, lead to heart disease and kill you. In 1890, the leading cause of death was TB, or tuberculosis, which, wasn't preventable so to speak. It's scary to think that heart disease and cancer are, both, preventable diseases for the most part.
