I came here thinking this was gonna be about Marineland Aquariums....like the tank brand.

It disgust me that people can treat animals like that.

This really makes me mad  I could never treat an animal like that even if I tried. Maybe this is why things are best left in the wild.

I'd just caution everyone that the story was originally printed by the Toronto Star, which is a left wing publication. Also, Marineland has been targetted for years by the sorts of animal rights groups that advocate for absolutely no animal captivity of any sort.

That's not to say that there aren't some issues with the place. However, this could be orchestrated by an animal rights group, and happily reprinted by the media.

True, although a good friend of mine has been there and alluded to the fact that they left early because they were appalled by the condition of the animals. And she's not really one to be overly sensitive to something like that.

I was there about 3 weeks ago, and that was my first time going back since I was a child. I didn't really notice any issues with the condition of the animals. I did notice that overall the park looked a bit tired and in need of updating.

It could just be that the park is on the decline, and they don't have the operating capital to properly maintain the animal's habitiat. I'm not trying to defend the park, or condone the mistreatment of animals. I'm just saying take the story with a grain of salt.

There have been repreated rumours of Disney buying the park. If they could update it along the lines of an "Animal Kingdom," that would be something. In the past, the owner has refused to sell. However, he's getting older now and this sort of negative publicity may make he re-think selling it. He also apparently owns a ton of land adjascent to the park. There's lots of room for expansion.

Animal Kingdom is pretty neat. And I get it, but I'm probably closer to one of the overreacting animal rights group people than I am to your average person. A touch too much so perhaps. I won't go circuses or carnivals that have animals, and I'm not really a fan of MOST zoo's, although I repect ones that do it right and I appreciate what they do to conserve and educate.

The 4 killer whale deaths seems indicative of an issue, IMO

Hopefully the media attention will get them to improve conditions for the animals.

I noticed that they have plans to build a large aquarium there. Perhaps they should divert the funds to upgrading the conditions for the animals they have already.

I liked Animal Kingdom in that it seemed to strike some sort of balance between conservation, and just being profit motivated. Hopefully Disney would have the money to create some four season attractions to make the park viable.

Unfortunatly things are not always best in the wild with poaching and what not. Although I hate seeing animals in zoos because there manmade habitats are so much smaller than they would be in the wild (call me a hypocrite since I have a fishtank I guess), many species are endangered and need protection.
It does need to be done right though, Pittsburgh zoo breeds all kinds of animals and in recent years had tiger cubs, sea-lion pups, and elephant babies. They currently have an Amur leapard, polar bears, a black rhino, and just got 2 new Komodo dragons so hopefully they can find some partners and help breed the species. They just opened a huge hospital wing for sick and injured animals as well

Sorry Cosmo kind of went off on a different tangent here dont mean to hijack:)
