Marineland carbon question??

So i read on another thread that said im not useing the marineland black diamond carbon.... Is that carbon bad for some reason??? i have bought some recently and was just woundering?? ..... well i just looked at the countainer and it said Premium activated carbon... is it ok to use with my reef tank??

 

Marineland Black Diamond is one of the better carbons out there. I don't know the difference between their premium carbon and black diamond. In spite of the name, I would assume the Black Diamond to be superior. However, either should be safe to use.

 

Carbon is a funny thing, some are great and are lesser known and some are very well known and recommended but are not that great at absorbing much of anything... Look for coal based carbon as compared to coconut, coconut is a great carbon but is really only effective at air purification NOT water purification. Look for coal based, with a good amount of pore size diversity to absorb different sized contaminats. I know there was an article written on carbon quality but I have the sinking suspiscion that it was biased.

What you are looking for in carbon is size, coconut in size 8x30, 12x30 12x40 is good for water same size for coal, and there is not much difference in carbons its the size and most carbon only come from A few different places Marineland puts there name on it and charges more I have worked with carbon over 5 years in enviromental company water and air filters the larger size is for air, if you could find reactivated carbon its alot cheaper and works great
