I currently have a Marineland 400 Biowheel for my 47 gallon tank and I was looking for something a little better and less clumsy than this HOB monstrosity. I heard the Fluval 305 is a great choice and is a step above the filter I have now. Anyone have any feedback on the 305 or opinions on the filter swap? Thanks for your help as always! :)

I have both and love them both. The 305 is going to hold a lot more media than your emperor but it does not offer wet dry bio filtering. I would run them both but take everything out of the emporer other than the bio wheel.

If I could only have one of them the 305 hands down. I have both on my FW tank now.

I had the 305 on my previous 55 gallon setup (see the quick video in my signature below).
It worked great. I rinsed out the sponges and changed the carbon every 6-8 weeks. It's not very loud either inside a stand.

K+ Good point they are very quiet. You can put the output a few inches under water and never hear a thing.

I got the Fluvel and I must say, I am impressed. this thing is definitely a lot more efficient than the Emperor!! Not to mention a ton quieter! :D
