Are these LED lights any good? I was looking at them and they didn't seem half bad for the price. The question is are they good enough for a reef that I plan to have with a 40B. I would like to be able to keep SPS. Any info on these?

From what I have read, these lights are not suitable for reefs, there are a few different models but even the one that says it is for reefs will only sustain lower light corals imo.

The marineland produces Okay PAR. Here they got 80 @ 18".

Certainly not stellar, but you could keep some corals, albeit you may be somewhat limited. My bigger concern though is the reports people keep posting regarding build quality issues.

For a budget LED, you may want to look at the Boost Mu 135. It is a bit more, but produces a lot more PAR and I have heard nothing but great things about it. Still it isn't super high PAR, more mid-range, but much better than the Marineland and should be fine on a shallow tank such as the 40B.

He's not being rude mawnkey. This question literally gets asked all the time. I wish we could get a sticky in the LED forum so that people would stop posting the same question over and over.

To answer your question, dont waste your money. The marineland light has serious build quality issues from what I've read. They also dont have good PAR output and limit you on coral selection like has already been stated. I would look into another option, such as maybe some PAR 30 or 38 bulbs. Alot of people have been using them lately with great results.

Leds are expensive to buy up front compared to t5s or other lighting. But you have to figure in bulb replacement for T5 or MH lighting, plus the savings in electricity.

True. What would you recomend for led on a reef tank? Probably something that would be able to sustain sps

It depends on a lot of factors. My personal opinion is to DIY everything. The rapidled kits are super nice kits and they are wonderful to work with. Some people are going with the aquastyle kits but they take more leds to get the same results. The diy route is going to get you the best light for the money.

If you aren't the diy type, then look into boostled par30 bulbs. Do a search and you should have no problem finding plenty of people here who are using them.

There's also the AI Sol units that have just received a price drop and are loved by many reefers. I haven't researched these that much so I don't know if one would cover your 40b or not.
